Sumi-e is the traditional Japanese art of brush painting using black ink. This style of spontaneous brushwork is simple and expressive.

We will watch a short slide show of Kyoto that includes a selection of my teacher’s and my work. I’ll also show a video of my teacher, at the age of 91, painting a large mural in a Buddhist temple in Japan.

I’ll talk about the materials used in sumi-e and give an overview of the techniques and philosophy of this ancient art.

Participants will also have a chance to paint.
